Daybreak Lectures on issues around dementia

with No Comments

We are delighted to announce the first of a Daybreak Lecture series.  Professor Robin Jacoby, our Daybreak Patron, will be giving a talk titled ‘ Wills and Financial Affairs for People with Dementia’, and Phillippa Carling will give a talk titled ‘Finding New Therapies for Neurodegeneration’.  Phillippa is a researcher at the Oxford Drug Discovery Institute.

The lectures will take place on Friday, 23rd November 2018 from 6.30 pm at St Margaret’s Institute on Polstead Road in Oxford.  There will be a charge of £7.00 to attend, payable on the door, and wine and soft drinks will be available in the interval.

Professor Jacoby described the purpose of the lecture:  ‘Mental capacity for financial affairs and making Wills is decision-specific. Capacity for financial affairs is governed by the Mental Capacity Act. Capacity to make a Will is governed by a famous common law judgment. People with Dementia may make Wills but they are vulnerable to exploitation.’

Phillippa Carling will give a brief overview of what is happening in the drug discovery lab at ODDI, with some videos of some of their equipment. She will explain about the ODDI and how they are trying to find new therapies and hopes to bring some physical plates to show us.

We hope you will join us to hear these fascinating lectures, and also find out a bit more about Daybreak and the services we provide.

We will be announcing further lectures in 2019.  Please note that a proposed lecture on 7th December has been postponed until then.
